R. B. Holt
1882 - 1952

The R. B. Holt Foundation was established in Baca County, Colorado in 1959 by Bowers Holt of Springfield in honor of his father R. B. Holt of Walsh. The foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to assisting and encouraging post secondary education for the residents of Baca County, Colorado, through scholarship grants for study at select state universities. The foundation also provides specific project grants to non-profit organizations for the betterment of Baca County.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

It is the intent of the R. B. Holt Foundation to award one scholarship yearly to a high school senior graduating from a Baca County, Colorado public high school. The scholarship for the current year is $4,000 per year for four years, reviewed annually. Funds will be sent directly to the college for the student’s tuition account as follows: $2,000 in August for the fall semester, and $2,000 in January for the spring semester.

Note: Do not confuse the R. B. Holt Foundation scholarship with the Laura Holt Scholarship Fund. The two scholarships are totally unrelated.

Qualifying

  1. You must have continuously resided in Baca County and consecutively attended one of the public high schools in Baca County for the last three semesters. This means the entire junior year and senior year to date. This includes Springfield High School, Walsh High School, Vilas High School, Pritchett High School and Campo High School. Students attending any other kind of private, parochial, or correspondence school are not eligible.
  2. A combined SAT score of 1000 or an ACT composite score of 24 or more is required for consideration. Those scoring below will not be considered.
  3. The scholarship will only be awarded for full-time undergraduate study at Colorado State University, Fort Collins or Pueblo campus, University of Colorado, Boulder, Denver or Colorado Springs campus, or Colorado School of Mines, Golden. The scholarship cannot be used at any other colleges.
  4. The scholarship will not be granted to a person who has been awarded a full scholarship which provides for tuition, room and board and other college expenses such as the Boettcher Foundation Scholarship. The Holt Scholarship will not be granted if the funds will simply reduce what another scholarship is already providing.

Applying

There is no formal application form. You must write a letter to the Foundation Board requesting the scholarship in which you include your address, home phone number, your parents’ names and which of the three approved colleges and campus location you will be attending. The letter should outline the following information: personal and school history, church and/or community service, past work experience, and career and college plans.

The letter should also discuss your financial need for the scholarship; however, providing proof of financial need is not required. Please do not send copies of income tax returns.

Include high school transcripts with SAT or ACT scores. The letter and all supporting information must be received by mail in Denver by April 1 of each year. Letters of recommendation from teachers or friends are not required. All Baca County seniors meeting the above requirements are urged to apply for the scholarship.

An interview with the Foundation Board will be scheduled with all applicants in Baca County in late April or early May. If, by the time of the interview, you do not meet any one of the above qualifications, it is imperative that the foundation be notified. For example, if you have decided not to attend one of the qualifying colleges or have been awarded a full scholarship, please inform the foundation immediately, as there is no purpose in participating in an interview, if you no longer qualify. The winner will be notified prior to high school graduation exercises in May.

The scholarship will be renewed each year provided that a 2.6 out of a 4.0 grade point average is maintained, or a grade point average which places the scholarship recipient in the upper half of the class. During the term of the scholarship, recipients are expected to comport themselves in a responsible manner, and comply with the law. Failure to do so, in the Board’s opinion, could result in forfeiture of the scholarship. The total scholarship will be limited to $16,000 over four years of continuous full-time undergraduate college study. This is considered a minimum of 15 hours per semester.

It is also a requirement that the Foundation Board be kept informed of the student's progress on a regular basis, and that an official transcript of grades be sent to the Foundation at the end of each school year.

Other Grants

The foundation will occasionally contribute support to non-profit organizations for specific projects in Baca County. Since the primary mission of the foundation is the annual scholarship, these grants are made infrequently. The foundation does not assume the role of the sole provider of funds for a project and encourages applicants to seek a variety of individual, government and private funding sources for grant support.
